THE ARTICHOKE HEART
       (2009)


Artichokes are growing
in my garden

I harvested one
prematurely
if one is to believe
the boiled result
(I think it was the eagerness
not my lack of culinary skill)

Perhaps I'm eager
for summer to bloom fully

to be sweating out sweating
out! recent troubles

through the hundred-degree days
of Napa Valley summer
